Palm Sunday – Saturday, March 27 at 5:00 p.m. at Lake Oconee Lutheran Church; Sunday, March 28 at 9:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. at Redeemer: This will be our traditional celebration of Jesus’ royal entry into Jerusalem (we will not process, but palms will be available), followed by the narration of Christ’s Passion according to the Gospel of Mark. There will be Holy Eucharist with distribution of the consecrated bread on Saturday, and Modified Communion on Sunday. For the Saturday service you must register in advance with Carl Stollenmeyer for the Sunday services you must register in advance with Gina Canavan.
Tenebrae – Wednesday, March 31 at 6:00 p.m. at Redeemer: This ancient service involves a series of readings from the Book of Lamentations, the Letter to the Hebrews, and Treatises from St. Augustine. During the course of the readings, candles are extinguished until only one remains. That one is not extinguished, but removed from the sanctuary (representing Christ’s crucifixion). A loud noise (representing the earthquake at his resurrection) sounds, and the lone candle is brought forth, and the people leave in silence following that candle. Please register to attend by contacting Fr. Bill Combs.
Maundy Thursday – Thursday, April 1, at 7:00 p.m. at Redeemer: The Maundy Thursday service has two foci. One focus is on the great commandment from Jesus to love as we are loved, and to serve one another. The outward and visible sign of this first focus is the washing of feet; people participating remotely should strongly consider washing the feet of your spouse/child/grandchild during the service (one parishioner said to me that there is nothing quite like having your grandchild wash your feet – “unforgettable,” was the word). The second focus is on the institution of the Lord’s Supper. If we have only a few in attendance, we will have Holy Eucharist with distribution of the consecrated bread; if we have more folks, we will have Modified Communion. The service ends in candlelight with the stripping of the altar and the recitation of Psalm 22. Please register to attend by contacting Fr. Bill Combs.
Good Friday – Friday, April 2, at 12:00 p.m. at Redeemer: The Good Friday liturgy revolves entirely around the crucifixion of Jesus. During this service we hear again the Passion Narrative. There is space for prayer and reflection during the Veneration of the Cross. We conclude with further prayers, and depart again in silence. Please register to attend by contacting Fr. Bill Combs.
Easter – Saturday, April 3 at 5:00 p.m. at Lake Oconee Lutheran Church; Sunday, April 4 at 9:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. at Redeemer: Holy Week concludes with the jubilation of the Feast of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ! Bring your bells to ring with every hallelujah. Because of the anticipated demand to attend, we will plan for Modified Communion at all three services. If attendance at Redeemer or LOLC allows it, we will have Holy Eucharist with distribution of the consecrated bread. For the Saturday service you must register in advance with Carl Stollenmeyer ; for the Sunday services you must register in advance with Gina Canavan .
